Periodontal treatment involves caring for the soft and hard tissues (gums and bone) that surround the teeth. Conditions such as gum recession, overgrown gum tissue, periodontal pockets, inflammation of the gums or bone loss may occur in both adolescent and adult patients. These problems are usually best addressed prior to starting orthodontic treatment. A dental specialist called a periodontist is consulted for treatment of these problems.
